What is indices trading?

Indices trading means taking a position on the movement of an entire market rather than a single company. When you trade an index such as the S&P 500 or the Nasdaq 100, you are tracking the combined performance of the companies inside that market or sector.

Through CFDs you can trade an index as it rises or falls without owning the underlying shares. That flexibility matters most around earnings season, interest-rate decisions, and shifts in global risk appetite.

Indices trading FAQs

Trading an index through a CFD means speculating on the index price moving up or down without owning the underlying asset. An index ETF, by contrast, gives you a share in a fund that actually tracks the index. Tradeview offers both: index CFDs on MT4 and MT5, and index ETFs through the EQView platform.

Open and fund a trading account, then find the index you want in the Market Watch window of MT4 or MT5 using its symbol — WS30 for the Dow Jones, SPXm for the S&P 500, NDX for the Nasdaq 100. Set your position size, decide whether you are buying or selling, and place a stop-loss and a take-profit before you confirm the order.

Trading hours differ by index and generally follow the schedule of the home exchange. US indices such as the Dow Jones, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq trade through extended US market hours, while the main European indices trade during their local market hours. Indices are not available for trading at the weekend.

Swap is applied to positions held overnight on a standard account. The Islamic account lets you trade indices with no swap and no administrative fee charged in its place, which suits traders who prefer to follow the rules of Islamic finance.

Leverage of up to 1:100 is available on the major indices, in line with Tradeview policy. Leverage lets you open a larger position with less capital, but it can multiply losses as much as it multiplies gains, so it should be used carefully and within a clear risk-management plan.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average appears on MT4 and MT5 under the symbol WS30, the Nasdaq 100 under NDX, and the S&P 500 under SPXm. You can find the full symbol for every index in the trading conditions table above, and open it by searching for that symbol in the Market Watch window inside the platform.
